Meet The Acupuncturists

Sharon Sherman – Founder, Practitioner of Oriental Medicine

Sharon Sherman is the founder of the Empirical Point Acupuncture practice in Philadelphia. She has been licensed to practice acupuncture and Oriental Medicine since 2001. Sharon is a Pennsylvania Licensed Practitioner of Oriental Medicine (L.OM.) and a Board-appointed member of the Consulting Staff at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, part of the Jefferson Health System. Specializing in Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal medicine and Oriental medicine, Sharon holds the highest credential available from both the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine and the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. This distinction places her amongst only 8% of her peer practitioners across the state. Sharon has logged more extensive education with experts in the field and continuing education hours than the vast majority of other practitioners and is also licensed in New Mexico, which has one of the most arduous licensure processes in the U.S.

Sharon’s approach to treatment and patient care is educational and collaborative. She spends an extensive amount of time getting to know her patients and talking with them about their conditions and long-term health goals. Sharon is also committed to educating patients in order to create awareness about their current habits and how changing their lifestyle, integrating customized Oriental medicine, acupuncture and herbal therapeutics and limiting unhealthy activities can have a lifelong impact on their health. Sharon’s style is open and accessible and she takes the time to explain and build patients’ understanding around both the etiology and the necessary steps to reduce or relieve their condition. She treats a wide range of conditions with a clinical specialty in chronic pain management. Sharon sees clients in two Philadelphia locations: Center City Philadelphia and the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia.

Sharon earned a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine with honors from Tri-State College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in 2001. She completed this coursework while also working a full-time schedule and commuting to New York City three days per week for classes. Additionally, she has graduated from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, located in Philadelphia, and received a full scholarship for her graduate studies in Kent State University’s Master of Fine Arts program. She is a former acupuncture faculty member at the Won Institute, where she developed and implemented the highest level Oriental Medicine theory classes for third year students – these curriculum are still in use today – and developed the school’s first online learning tools as part of the Institute’s efforts to expand learning programs. Additionally, Sharon is a member of several Philadelphia business associations that promote excellence in both ethical and green business practices. She is a member of the Sustainable Business Network (SBN) and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the Chestnut Hill Business Association (CHBA).

Prior to honing her skills and joining the acupuncture and Oriental Medicine field, Sharon was an entrepreneur running her own graphic design business for almost two decades. Her work focused on Fortune 100 companies largely in the insurance, pharmaceutical and chemical sectors and delivered graphics for print, video and onsite conference and presentation support. A native of Philadelphia, she now lives just outside of the city in Montgomery County.

Stephanie Baron – Acupuncturist

Sharon selected Stephanie from the many classes of students she taught. She chose Stephanie to join Empirical Point Acupuncture for many qualities that are in alignment with Empirical Point’s Values and Mission.

Please join Empirical Point Acupuncture in welcoming Stephanie Baron, an acupuncture and Chinese Medicine practitioner licensed in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and board certified in acupuncture through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). In 2008, Stephanie received her Master of Acupuncture from The Won Institute of Graduate Studies, where she was a student of Empirical Point Acupuncture’s founder, Sharon Sherman.

Stephanie brings not only an excellent educational background to Empirical Point Acupuncture, but also exceptional critical thinking skills, remarkable aptitude and resonance for the practice of Chinese medicine – all of which align with Empirical Point Acupuncture’s vision, mission and dedication to the highest quality patient service. She uses these skills in her hands on approach to treating patients and working collaboratively with them to develop an optimal treatment regimen. In addition to acupuncture, Stephanie is trained in and practices gua sha, cupping and nutritional therapy. Her skills enable her to treat patients with a wide array of ailments – from sinus issues to knee pain. She has a particular interest and specialization in autoimmune conditions.

Prior to earning her Master’s degree, Stephanie graduated from Tyler School of Art at Temple University and worked for The Philadelphia Museum of Art. She also worked at a large, state-of-the-art veterinary medicine facility, where she witnessed first-hand the positive and healing effects that acupuncture treatments had on the center’s animal patients. This experience led her to pursue her degree in acupuncture.

A lifelong resident of the Philadelphia region, Stephanie has also earned her yoga teaching certification and a certification of Swedish massage in 2004. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and pets.
